German Soldiers and the Occupation of France, 1940 - Bokus

A new French government was established in Vichy in the unoccupied southern part of the country. Like so much else that happened in France during World War II, the Nazi occupation of Paris was something entirely more complex and ambiguous than has generally been understood. Vichy France (July 1940–September 1944), France under the regime of Marshal Philippe Petain, from France’s defeat by Nazi Germany to its liberation by the Allies in World War II. France was divided into two zones: one under German military occupation and one left to the French in full sovereignty, at least nominally. After further negotiations, France was also granted an occupation zone in Austria. The French zone in west of that country bordered the French zone in Germany, thus creating a contiguous area of French-occupied territories that bordered each other and/or France itself. The non-occupied region of France, known as Vichy France, was set up by the Germans and governed by Marshall Pétain. His reputation was still high and in the early days of Vichy, his leadership gave it some stability and kudos.

On 22 June 1940, the French surrendered and signed an armistice with the Nazis. France was then divided in two zones.
